[I062] The roles of radiographers in medical imaging and radiotherapy in Europe

2018

Very fast development of technologies in medical imaging and therapy has changed the role of radiographer in Europe. Over the past ten years education and necessary skills and competencies for radiographers has become more similar in most EU countries due to input of EFRS Educational Wing, but there are still rather significant differences in the roles of radiographers between countries. Role expansion is often initiated by external and internal factors that lead to advanced practice for radiographers. However, there is also a limiting factor that functions as a barrier for development of radiographer’s role and mainly that is connected to resistance when radiologists/medical physicists obj…

Role of fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in gastrointestinal cancers

2015

AbstractFluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) has become a routine imaging modality for many malignancies and its use is currently increasing. In the present review article, we will summarize the evidence for FDG-PET/CT use in digestive cancers (excluding neuroendocrine tumours), and review the existing recommendations. While PET/CT is nowadays considered to be an important tool in the initial workup of oesophageal and anal cancers, new data are emerging regarding its use in assessing therapeutic efficacy, radiotherapy treatment planning, and detection of recurrence in case of isolated tumour marker elevation. Moreover, PET/CT may help …

Brachytherapy organ dose estimation using Monte Carlo simulations of realistic patient models

2018

Radiation Therapy Planning Systems (RTPS) currently used in hospitals contain algorithms based on deterministic simplifications that do not properly consider electrons lateral transport in the areas where there are changes of density, and as a result, erroneous dose predictions could be produced. According to this, the present work proposes the use of Monte Carlo method in brachytherapy planning systems, which could affect positively on the radiotherapy treatment planning, since it provides results that are more accurate and takes into account the in homogeneities density variations. This paper presents a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of a brachytherapy prostate treatment with I-125 seeds, us…
